Recognized internationally for its advanced geospatial portal solutions, Compusult, based in Mount Pearl, NL, will receive $2.3 million over a 2-year period from the Atlantic Innovation Fund (AIF) towards a $3.6 million project in geospatial technology.
The project, called "Geospatial Open Platform Sensorweb (G-OPS)", is an expansion to Compusult's flagship product Web Enterprise Suite (WES), which combines location-based information such as maps and satellite imagery from various and disparate sources into a single user interface. The expansion will add a feature which allows access to sensors deployed anywhere in the world.
Sensors monitor and provide real-time information on such things as meteorological and oceanographic conditions, and marine traffic and activity. The information provided by these sensors can be accessed but mostly on an individual basis. This geoportal will provide rapid, Web-enabled access to any combination of these sensors simultaneously leading to more effective decision making in areas such as health and safety, climate change and disaster management.
The system will give users a wide range of functionality, including the ability to observe and use various information, to sometimes control the sensors themselves (called tasking), and to receive alerts via telephone, email, or text message when the sensors detect a reading outside a specified range. This addition to the Web Enterprise Suite will make WES very highly sought-after by various industries. The initial market will be the US military but the product also has applications for environmental monitoring, weather reporting, disaster relief and infrastructure monitoring. The funding from AIF will help bring the project to completion.
Compusult was selected during Round VI of an initiative by the AIF (a division of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) to enhance Atlantic Canada's ability to carry out leading-edge R&D in order to bring new knowledge and ultimately create new jobs and business opportunities in Atlantic Canada.
The funding announcement, made by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (ACOA) on January 22, 2009, declared a total of $11.7 million in funding to be shared among five Newfoundland companies. Combined with private and other public funding, these five projects are worth approximately $19.8 million.
