Compusult designed and developed ScanTELL initially as a “proof of
concept” project for the Assistive Devices Industry Office (ADIO) of
Industry Canada. ScanTELL allows visually or reading impaired persons to independently
identify bar-coded items in their workplaces, homes, and retail outlets. ScanTELL
incorporates a relational database management system and user interface that
can be used by visually impaired persons.
ScanTELL uses bar codes as tags for associated database look-up. The system
supports a number of voice synthesizers (e.g., SounText, DECTalk, Artec, SmarTalk,
DigiSpeech, etc.) with voice output functions tightly integrated into the
system software. ScanTELL integrates commercial off-the-shelf voice synthesizers,
bar code scanners, and database management tools. Compusult is currently developing
a portable version of ScanTELL, which will house a single board PC, a voice
synthesizer, and bar code scanner in a single battery-powered, handheld unit.
